Transfusion and Hemostasis in Cardiac Surgery—An Update

Overview

Tissue injury associated with a surgical procedure can activate coagulation leading to an increased risk of either thrombosis or bleeding. Additionally, a growing number of patients who undergo surgery receive antithrombotic therapy that includes many new anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs that target novel sites in the coagulation pathway. Physicians and others involved in the care of surgical patients should be aware of the current concepts of hemostasis and their implications for the care of surgical patients. The supplement to the March 2008 issue of Transfusion addresses hemostasis and blood management in cardiac surgical patients with an update of current perspectives.
